New Genoa Pra’ Port Viaduct Inaugurated: Strategic Highway Link Boosts Terminal Connectivity and Logistics Efficiency

The Genoa Pra’ terminal and port area have taken part in the inauguration ceremony of the new viaduct connecting the motorway network directly to the port. This strategic infrastructure marks a major step forward in improving accessibility, traffic flow, and the overall competitiveness of the Port of Genoa.

Officially opened to both passenger and heavy goods traffic on 29 July 2025, the new viaduct significantly enhances land access to the port, streamlining logistics operations and strengthening the efficiency of freight movement in and out of the terminal.

Between August and December 2025, the demolition of the old viaduct is scheduled, paving the way for further infrastructure developments, including future railway upgrades and track doubling works that will further increase the port’s intermodal capacity.

The project is part of a broader development strategy promoted by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, aimed at upgrading both road and rail connections serving the Port of Genoa. It is closely integrated with major infrastructure initiatives such as the Terzo Valico dei Giovi rail project and the modernization of rail lines and freight sorting yards, all of which are essential to the evolution of the region’s logistics network.

From a technical perspective, the new viaduct is approximately 450 meters long and consists of 11 spans. It features a three-lane configuration—two lanes for inbound port traffic and one lane for outbound flow—ensuring optimized traffic management. Built using a modular prefabricated steel system, the structure is equipped with modern noise barriers, advanced lighting systems, and next-generation safety guardrails, guaranteeing high standards of operational safety and efficiency.

The project involved more than 200 professionals and required complex coordination to manage interactions with existing infrastructure, road networks, railway lines, and ongoing port activities.

Construction began in May 2021 and has now reached the operational phase, marked by the official opening ceremony attended by senior institutional representatives, including the President of the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority Matteo Paroli, the President of the Liguria Region Marco Bucci, the Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Edoardo Rixi, the Genoa City Councillor Massimo Ferrante, Admiral Antonio Ranieri of the Port Authority – Coast Guard, and Alessio Piana, Regional Councillor for Economic Development, Blue Economy, and Ports of Liguria.
