PSA SECH Advances Intermodal Transport with First Train at Rugna Rail Terminal
A significant step forward for the intermodality of our SECH terminal! This morning, the first train was handled at the Rugna Rail Yard, operated under concession by PSA SECH and Bettolo, now upgraded and fully operational with the new Künz A-RMG (Automated Rail Mounted Gantry) cranes purchased by PSA Italy in 2023 and delivered in the last quarter of 2024, in line with our investment plan. These cranes have been specifically designed for the needs of the PSA SECH terminal, featuring tailored solutions and high energy efficiency, and will soon be remote-controlled and semi-automated.
The Rugna Yard represents a crucial “last-mile” rail link for the port and, following the works carried out by the Port Authority, is now capable of handling up to 20 pairs of trains per day.
The development of this rail facility completes a key element for the intermodality of the Port of Genoa, also thanks to its connection to both the future Campasso station and the Sampierdarena maritime station (“Fuorimuro link”), enabling a direct connection to the Terzo Valico dei Giovi.
Among the innovative features implemented by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority, the transfer platform at the end of the yard allows the automatic movement of locomotives between tracks, optimizing shunting times and enabling multiple tracks to be served simultaneously.
We are proud of this achievement, which once again demonstrates how cooperation and innovation can drive the growth of our terminals and our port.
